Antoni developed a keen sense for physics and mathematics while following his passion for sailing. Eager to learn what made his sailboat go faster, and how to best use the force of the wind, he mastered the mechanics of sailing and achieved several medals in regional, national and European championships. His sailing experience also gave him the skills to navigate through his studies with particular ease.

Antoni did his bachelor degree at EPFL in Mechanical Engineering. During his studies at EPFL, he spent an exchange year at the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. There, he developed a keen interest in robots capable of taking decisions on their own through the use of Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence. Following his newly discovered passion, he joined ETHZ to pursue a MSc. in Robotics where he focused on Autonomous Drones.

Antoni worked on drones both during his courses and his internship at GoPro, where he developed new algorithms for GoPro’s soon-to-be-released drone. He followed his internship with a research assistantship at the Robotics Perception Group (RPG) in the University of Zurich, where he developed an algorithm, first-of-its-kind, that allowed drones to see in the dark and travel at higher speeds than it was before possible. While achieving this success in the field of autonomous systems, he developed in parallel a startup that currently produces and sells bicycle lights that promise to make cycling safer. Curious as he is, he has also kept challenging himself by participating in international robotics competitions around the world. He led his team to victory in the CAT vehicle international Self-Driving Car competition in the US, and he helped the RPG team to achieve the podium in ICRA’s international Autonomous Drone race in Canada.

For his Master’s Thesis, Antoni stayed at MIT under the supervision of Prof. Luca Carlone, where he worked on a novel algorithm for robots to map a scene in 3D while accurately estimating their position (providing GPS-like information that works indoors as well) . His algorithms are applicable to a wide range of systems: such as autonomous cars, drones, augmented/virtual reality, and even planetary rovers. These systems have all in common that they need to understand the world surrounding them in order to work reliably.

Antoni is committed to improving the field of Autonomous Systems, and, to this end, he will pursue a Ph.D. at MIT, which will be possible thanks to the support of the Zdenek and Michaela Bakala foundation.
